Puri r cholar daal (puri and Bengal gram lentil curry) with Rawa (suji) halwa – shivratri special

With 33 crores of God and every day some festival in our kitty, we really don’t need any more reason to celebrate 🥳

Shivaratri is one of our most auspicious celebrations. This festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of “overcoming darkness and ignorance” in life and the world. It is observed by remembering Shiva, chanting, fasting and meditating on ethics and virtues such as honesty, non-injury to others, charity, forgiveness.

Though I couldn’t follow the whole process ardently, but a little Puja could be followed by special menu for the occasion!!!

There’s a saying: “ A little prayer goes a long way”! So let’s pray for everything good in the World and enjoy our journey called LIFE!!!

Food, the lifeline for Life

Ingredients for daal (curry):

  • Bengal gram lentils ( washed and put in the pressure cooker. Cooked for 3 whistles)
  • Ginger small piece cut very fine
  • Ghee(clarified butter)
  • Green chillies
  • Turmeric power
  • Coriander powder
  • Hing (asafoetida) a pinch
  • Whole red chilli
  • Whole cumin
  • Salt to taste
  • Coconut pieces (optional for garnishing)
  • A dash of sugar

Making the daal:

Daal boiled till soft and mushy

Heat ghee in a deep pan, add whole cumin seeds and break and add the whole red chili, let them splatter for a minute. Add the asafoetida, then ginger and cook till the raw taste is gone. The powdered spices ( turmeric, coriander) and the green chilies are added. If you are adding coconut pieces, this is the time to do that! Cook for a minute and the spice mixture is added to the boiled lentils. Adjust the consistency by adding enough water. Add salt and let it come to a boil on high heat. After it starts boiling put the heat on medium and let it simmer for 3-4 minutes. Switch off the flame and add a pinch of sugar to balance the tastes!

Making Puri:

Puri is usually made with whole wheat flour, but I prefer to add some all-purpose flour with it.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Salt(1 teaspoon)
  • Oil (2 tablespoons)
  • Water (as required for forming the dough)

In a bowl take both types of flours, add salt and oil and mix until the flour gets crumbly. Start adding water little at a time and keep kneading till you have a soft dough. Cover and rest the dough for at least 30 minutes.

Frying the puris:

Divide the dough into small balls (golf ball size😉), and start rolling. Don’t forget to dust the balls with some flour before rolling.

Heat enough oil in a pan for deep frying. Once hot, start frying the puris one at a time. Press the puri in the oil, till it puffs up! Turn and fry the other side. Take it out when you see the puri taking a golden tinge.

Puffed up Puri

You can have the puri along with the deal (curry), but I served some fried potatoes as well. A treat should look like a treat 😄🤤
